Spiky cast glass bowl.

8cm x 16cm

This bowl was made using the Lost Wax method where the initial shape is created out of wax and then cast in a plaster/silica mold. The mold has the wax steamed out and is placed in the kiln with a terracotta flowerpot full of glass chunks set up above it with the bottom hole aligned with the opening in the top of mold. Over the days of firing, the glass melts and flows into the mold to fill up the negative space. The small spikes on this bowl were pre-cast with green and black frit (finely crushed glass) and inserted into the plaster mold before being filled with molten glass during the casting process.

Learn more about Susie Lewis

Susie Lewis approaches glass as a material of discovery, working across blown, fused, slumped and constructed forms. Rather than imposing a predetermined outcome, they allow each work to evolve through an intuitive dialogue with material, heat and process. Technical control sits alongside improvisation, risk and chance, giving the finished pieces a sense of immediacy and singularity.

Melbourne-based artist Susie Lewis has developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning glass, ceramics and jewellery. Following studies in ceramics at Box Hill TAFE, they undertook extensive training in glass, including three years of mentorship with Brenda Page, glass casting with Richard Morell and glass-blowing studies in Türkiye.

Lewis has exhibited in group exhibitions at Smith Street Gallery and Brunswick Street Gallery. Their broader practice encompasses jewellery, silversmithing, printmaking, textiles and ceramics, alongside teaching jewellery-making at Fitzroy Community School and within a therapeutic program at the Women’s Hospital.
