Artwork statement
Ride. Fly. Ride (2026) forms part of an ongoing exploration of memory, in which painting, drawing and text interact through layering, obscuring and revision. The work is built through layers of polymer paint, spray paint and transparent gesso, with charcoal drawing and fragments of text worked into the surface. An awkward, cartoon-like figure takes shape through repeated, overlapping charcoal lines, creating a sense of movement across the surface. Dark charcoal lines contrast with areas of pale pink, cream, grey and red, while traces of earlier marks remain visible within the layered surface.
Drawing on memories of learning to rollerblade, the painting moves between the fear of falling and the pleasure of movement. The peculiar struggle to stay upright becomes a reflection on the uncertainties and small absurdities of everyday life.
