ABOUT THE GALLERY
Flinders Lane Gallery is a privately owned commercial gallery. As such we are not government funded and rely solely on sales of artwork to run the gallery. The Director of Flinders Lane Gallery is Claire Harris. All exhibitions are curated by the Director and her knowledgeable, professional team.
ABOUT OUR EXHIBITION PROGRAMME
We run a rotating exhibition programme throughout the year, with a new exhibition every three - four weeks. The artworks shown range from contemporary Australian figurative and abstract paintings and sculpture through to contemporary Indigenous paintings. WHO EXHIBITS AT FLG?
The artists who exhibit at Flinders Lane Gallery are represented by the Gallery and are part of a stable of artists
- i.e. the main gallery space is not available for hire by external artists. A standard private commission structure is applicable to these artists, and exhibitions. All works exhibited are available for sale. Represented artists are selected by the Director Claire Harris based on quality of work and the strength of exhibition history.
CURATING
In conjunction with the artist, all exhibitions are curated by the Director, Claire Harris and the FLG team. The Director designs the presentation of each show, which includes the mood, layout, the positioning and hanging of artworks, and the lighting design. There is no need for environment controls as the gallery temperature and humidity are within a manageable range. Works also turnover at a high rate so there is no long-term storage. All exhibitions are curated specifically for the artwork being exhibited, in a layout that best presents the work in a compelling way. The lighting used is a cool light, and all exhibitions are presented with signage and a catalogue essay to accompany each show, as well as a list of artworks and prices.
LIGHTING, HUMIDITY ETC
The luminous flux of the LED lamps in the gallery is 600lm. Light intensity 550cd and they are a cool white light. There are no humidity readers, as the artworks are only stored for a relatively temporary period of time (either on exhibition, or in the stockroom before being sold to clients) and so the environment they are housed in does not need to be of museum quality.
EMERGING ARTISTS
Annually, Flinders Lane Gallery proudly presents a tightly curated show of emerging and unsigned artists. Artists are selected by the Director, either after being sighted at university graduate shows, via recommendation or by artists submitting their folio via email. It provides an opportunity for emerging artists to exhibit within a commercial gallery context, and display and sell their work to a wider audience. The gallery takes the same commission on sales as they would a represented artist. The FLG Emerging Artist Award is presented to an artist who displays outstanding artistic merit, and they are awarded a solo show at the gallery in the following year.
MARKETING & PROMOTION
Promotions for the gallery and exhibitions are made through art magazines such as Art Almanac, Australian Art Collector and Artist Profile; invitation cards and emails distributed to our mailing list; and via the internet and various avenues of social media. Some advertising is paid for by the gallery to guarantee the promotion of the exhibitions, and other media is distributed and published based on editorial submission selections.
INDIGENOUS ART
Flinders Lane Gallery is proud to exhibit and promote the work of selected contemporary Indigenous artists. Some information on individual artists and their communities is available on our website under the Aboriginal Art Stockroom section. The indigenous artists represented work in the same way as our other contemporary artists, in that artworks are selected, and exhibitions are curated at the Directors discretion, and a commission is taken on sold artworks. FLG works with long standing and highly reputable indigenous communities to ensure ethical art dealings and the acknowledgment of individual artists are always upheld.
