Break on Through

Double sided glass vase with spikes.
40cm x 30cm vessel opening 11cm x 6cm
This vase was created by combining multiple glass working techniques. Initially sheets of red, clear and white glass were fused together, then circles were cut out of the slab with a diamond saw and flipped over. The area around the circles that was lost to the saw width was then filled with black glass frit (finely crushed glass) and fused again into a thick slab which was rolled into a cylinder and blown by Scott Chaseling into a shape as detailed by this document: FLG Glass Slab Rollup Process.
I had previously fused together a block of red, white and black glass stringers (spaghetti strands of glass) and during the blowing process, we heated this and a chunk of black glass in the kiln so as to be hot enough to use in the final stages. The black glass was heated to molten temperature and draped around the rim of the vase and the multicoloured chunk was pressed against the sides and pulled away to create spikes.
