Artwork statement
Originally designed to represent the microcosm along-side Macrocosm (2025), this rotating hand composition is a recurring motif I use to explore colour relationships and approaches to transparency. In the work, the figure-ground relationship becomes unstable by subverting assumed light and value relationships, making the work appear to oscillate in space.

As human beings we are literate in the language of hands. They are gestures of emotion, of communication, touch and intimacy. They are symbols of creation. They can be used for good and for evil. The colour choice and fragmentation indicate a multiplicity of worlds invisible to us, and within them carry the trace of the hand of the artist.

Description:
An oil on canvas painting in a blackwood frame depicting a fragmented rotating hand in a dark colour scheme.
