Round bubble glass vase.

38cm x 38cm vessel opening 4cm x 4cm

The amethyst and aqua circles in this vase were blown separately and when cooled, were sliced into cross-sectional rings and placed flat on to a kiln shelf. In the blowing process (by Phil Stokes), these rings were picked up by rolling a hot glass cylinder over the top, then dipped into the crucible of molten glass to form a clear layer on the surface - which will trap an air bubble within the coloured ring.

Learn more about Susie Lewis

Susie Lewis approaches glass as a material of discovery, working across blown, fused, slumped and constructed forms. Rather than imposing a predetermined outcome, they allow each work to evolve through an intuitive dialogue with material, heat and process. Technical control sits alongside improvisation, risk and chance, giving the finished pieces a sense of immediacy and singularity.

Melbourne-based artist Susie Lewis has developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning glass, ceramics and jewellery. Following studies in ceramics at Box Hill TAFE, they undertook extensive training in glass, including three years of mentorship with Brenda Page, glass casting with Richard Morell and glass-blowing studies in Türkiye.

Lewis has exhibited in group exhibitions at Smith Street Gallery and Brunswick Street Gallery. Their broader practice encompasses jewellery, silversmithing, printmaking, textiles and ceramics, alongside teaching jewellery-making at Fitzroy Community School and within a therapeutic program at the Women’s Hospital.
