Falljokull
2025 – Original
watercolour monotype on paper, framed.
76cm x 56cm
"In my practice, I aim to evoke a sense of place, and to convey the humbling and restorative experience of walking in nature. Monotype allows me to combine additive brushwork and subtractive finger-marks, embedding care and value in the environments I depict, though time and touch.
This watercolour monotype print is my first response to Falljökull, or ‘falling glacier’, a tongue of Iceland’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. In 2024 I spent an impactful day hiking on Falljökull in torrential rain. Carefully navigating crevasses and moulins below the sharp compressions and deformations of the icefall, I was aware of my own vulnerability, and even more so, the vulnerability of the glacier – its accelerating retreat caused by climate change. I am still struggling to find the visual language and colour to adequately convey the memory of ice, and the confluence of rain and meltwater cascading between my feet."
