Introduction
Kim Anderson | Stuart McLachlan & Simon Cardwell
Flinders Lane Gallery BOOTH E01 at Sydney Contemporary 2026, Carriageworks
Call & Response brings together distinct Australian practices in a focused, intimate dialogue: the graphite and ink drawings of Kim Anderson, and the paper sculptures of Stuart McLachlan and large-scale photography of Simon Cardwell in collaboration with Stuart McLachlan.

Both bodies of work are rooted in ecological grief, yet they approach it from opposite poles. Anderson moves inward, into the body and the psyche, rendering the human experience of planetary crisis as something felt in muscle and nerve. McLachlan and Cardwell move outward, into the shared environment and the dwindling number of species that inhabit it, asking whether the endings we have authored might yet be rewritten. Together they form a call and response: the body undone by the world it loves, and the world being slowly, carefully rebuilt.
The exhibition offers no resolution. It holds two truths at once, that we are implicated in what is being lost, and that we are also capable of what is required to return it.
