Well Wishes

2025 – Original

oil on canvas.

122cm x 152cm

‘Well Wishes’ sees a figure sitting inside with a garden hose spraying at the outdoor pot plants, the water however is blocked by the window and instead pools at the figure's foot. The figure is watching this happen but doesn’t seem to know a solution, it’s action for the sake of doing something regardless of the outcome.

This looks at the idea of world guilt. We can see the outside issues and events of our world but from where a lot of us sit or the situations we are in, there often doesn’t feel like we can do anything other than send out well wishes, our ‘thoughts and prayers’, maybe share some posts or send a bit of money.

The overwhelming information coming in can be paralysing yet not doing anything feels selfish.

Bronwyn Hill is a Brisbane based painter whose practice predominantly focuses on portraiture and figurative representation. Recognised for her sensual photo-real oil paintings, full of poetic narratives and gentle observation, her work often explores ideas of self-analysis and introspection within moments of personal solitude. Imbued with a sense of stillness and contemplation, Hill’s use of light and shadow and its emotional impact is a recurring feature of her images, as is her subtle use of colour and exquisite depiction of natural forms.
