Exploring the art of making three dimensional objects, Small and Wall restricts the curated makers to create representational or abstract sculptural pieces that are smaller in scale, and are plinth or wall mounted.
Featuring FLG artists Jon Eiseman, Richard Blackwell and Dan Lorrimer and guest artists Al Roberts, Carolyn V Watson and Meredith Woolnough.
RICHARD BLACKWELL Interested in the design, materiality and reception of the built environment, Richard Blackwell’s interdisciplinary practice embraces sculpture, print media and digital fabrication to articulate the multiplicitous nature of encountering reality, from both an individual experience and from a more formal engagement with ideas of spatial theory.
By referencing interior finishes and building facades the cubes, facets, clusters and waves that make up his latest body of works continues to tease out concepts and systems grounded within both architectural and art historical frameworks. Working with ideas of continuation, variability, replication and relationship, the gradual extrusion of his geometric motifs, many of which have evolved from earlier works, allows Blackwell to take simple systems to a natural, almost self-governing resolve.

MEREDITH WOOLNOUGHMeredith Woolnough is an award-winning visual artist from the coastal region of Newcastle, Australia. She holds a degree in Fine arts, with first class honours, from the University of New South Wales and a Masters of Teaching from the University of Sydney. Meredith’s work is help in private, public and corporate collections worldwide. Woolnough maps the frameworks of the various veining systems found in nature to create work that explores the balance, harmony and connectivity of life on earth. Inspired by the patterns, structures and shapes found in plants, coral, cells and shells her embroideries represent both the robust beauty and elegant fragility of life.

AL ROBERTS The bronze sculptures by emerging Tasmanian artist Al Roberts wrestle with the notion of time, focussing on the constraints and stereotypical perception of the mind and body and deterioration associated with aging. Through exploring impulsive thoughts and the unpredictable movements of youth, Roberts juxtaposes these acts with that of the waning body. Highlighting the universal fear and uncomfortable silence surrounding the natural aging process and by depicting scenes that challenge societal norms, Roberts hopes to spur a re-evaluation of common misconceptions and prejudices associated with growing old and life’s more awkward moments.

CAROLYN V WATSON Carolyn V Watson anchors her practice in a place between the natural and the unknown. Beginning with objects that have a certain foundation of authenticity, Watson’s intuitive sculptural interactions both build upon and subtract from the original form. Movement and growth and the cycles of artistic practice allow then for her final pieces to at once appear familiar but also strange and other-worldly.
Watson is a multi-award-winning artist whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Australia. In 2017 she won the prestigious Shilliam Award Frank Lambert Memorial Prize at the Brisbane Sculpture Festival and was invited to exhibit at the internationally-regarded World Science Festival, Brisbane. Watson has received multiple awards for both her sculpture and drawings and in 2013 she secured a first prize of $15,000 at the inaugural Life Art Worldwide International. She is an eight-time finalist in the Moreton Bay Regional Art Awards, a six-time finalist in the Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing (Honourable Mention, 2011), and was selected for the 2012 John Fries Memorial Prize and the 2008 Churchie Emerging Art Prize. In 2015, her solo exhibition allgloryisfleeting(memoryandhand) was presented at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, resulting in an Artist in Residence with St Luke’s Anglican College, Bundaberg in 2016. Her work is held in public and private collections in Australia and internationally.

DAN LORRIMERDan Lorrimer is a designer maker living and working in Canberra, who works predominantly in sculpture and product design. His work is driven by a deep understanding of materials, industrial processes and a keen sense of exploration through making. Lorrimer has been a studio and fabrication technician for the last ten years, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture) from the Australian National Univeristy, Canberra in 2010. He has exhibited widely in both Sydney and Canberra. Dan Lorrimer has most recently been curated into the touring exhibition, STEEL: Art Design Architecture, curated by JamFactory’s Margaret Hancock Davis. In 2018 he was awarded first prize in the University of Western Sydney Sculpture Exhibition, in 2017, he was awarded a Highly Commended for the Best Artist in Denfair, a leading contemporary art and design fair.

JON EISEMAN Jon Eiseman’s sculptures extends beyond the physical, encompassing notions of time, spirituality and emotion. Cast in bronze his figurative sculptures have a whimsical and poetic quality in which the common man - often represented as a suited figure or solitary head - is fused with iconic symbols of the vessel, fish, bird, tower, tree, flag and ladder to suggest contemplation, humour and internal struggle. Drawn from the shadow world of dream and the inner landscape of the unconscious, his work creates an intriguing open-ended sense of narrative.
'Eiseman’s bronzes express facets of a private mythos developed over a long and successful career. This iconography Eiseman has encapsulated as “the lone figure on a journey through dreamlike landscapes, sometimes with strange companions and sometimes in strange situations”. With this thematic organising principle in mind, the scale of Eiseman’s works takes on a special significant.
