Driven by a desire to express something of the deeper, intimate experience that the landscape can offer, Kathryn Ryan’s painterly interpretations of nature move beyond the merely representational. This awareness can be keenly observed in the many layers of paint and glaze meticulously developed within her canvases. Deep and glassy, her works invite us to gaze into their surfaces. The stillness of these scenes is arresting. We are drawn into an evocative world of misty serenity.
In 2015 Kathryn Ryan's career to date was celebrated with a major retrospective exhibition held in her hometown at Warrnambool Art Gallery. Most recently she has been the winner of the People's Choice Award at Kings Art Prize (2019), finalist in the Tattersall’s Art Prize (2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), the Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize (2019, 2018), John Leslie Prize for Landscape (2018), Paul Guest Drawing Prize (2016), Bendigo Art Gallery (2016), the Fleurieu Art Prize (2011) and exhibited in the Salon des Refuse, Wynne Prize, SH Ervin Gallery (both in 2016). She has been short-listed for several major art awards including the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize in 2012, Wynne Prize (2000, 2004 and 2007), the Alice Prize in (1998, 1999 and 2001), and the Hutchins Art Prize in (1998, 1999, 2001). In 1998 Ryan was awarded the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award and in 1990 the BP Acquisitive Prize.
Ryan's works have been purchased by the curators and advisers for the Macquarie Group Collection, the Warrnambool Art Gallery Collection and Artbank. Most recently her work has been acquired by the Parliament House Collection and the RACV Collection.
