Suxing Zhang
Artist Profile
Drawing from historical photographs, old master paintings, and personal archives, Zhang displaces figures from their original temporal contexts. Removed from specific events, they are reduced to posture, weight, and endurance. Within his compositions, mythic and everyday elements coexist without hierarchy; and interiors, landscapes, and symbolic forms unfold within layered spatial fields. These environments remain structurally indifferent to the figures within them, reinforcing a sense of duration without direction.
Suxing Zhang is a Sydney-based painter and holds a PhD from the Queensland University of Technology. He was awarded 1st Prize at the Willoughby Emerging Art Prize and has been a finalist in the Prisma Art Prize (2026), Hornsby Art Prize (2026, 2024), National Emerging Art Prize (2025, 2023), 17th International ARC Salon (2024), Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize (2022), and was the winner of the Sony World Photography Awards in 2020.

My practice investigates forms of connection that preserve difference rather than dissolve it. I approach relation and duration as conditions through which heterogeneous fragments remain present and continue to shape one another beyond their original contexts. Through painting, I construct composite environments from figures, objects, architectural forms, and visual fragments drawn from historical imagery, art history, and personal archives. Displaced from their points of origin, these elements enter provisional relations within a shared pictorial space, where multiple temporalities coexist and meaning remains open to reinterpretation.
