Ken Smith  will use the opportunity of the concurrence of his exhibition “Coast Light – Recent Paintings” at Flinders Lane Gallery with this year’s Niteart events to talk about some of the thoughts and processes behind the creation of his most recent works. Ken will present in the gallery space, alongside the catalogued exhibition pieces, a range of supporting images including, on-site drawings and paintings that were vital to their making. This talk will reveal how a contemporary realist painter constructs his works.

Gina Kalabishis investigates her painterly arēte, activating the Flinders Lane Gallery Showroom in shimmering blue light, themed "Once in a blue moon" Kalabishis will present a number of her blue night paintings melding her playful homage to Australian landscape painting and her sensual ikebana  Australian native arrangements as united works. Responding to her  paintings Flower Vasette will display a large enamoured native  suspended floral  arrangement in response to Kalabishis's work. On the night the artist will be present to give a informal talk and will be creating a live night drawing responding back to Flower Vasette's arrangement thus generating a full loop of captivating art making.

As the night draws on, Holding Pattern will inscribe the darkness of the street outside Flinders Lane Gallery with light and the human voice. This new work by Hannah Quinlivan, in collaboration with Louise Keast and Alexandra Hobba, will combine a spatial drawing from LED lights with a performance of classical vocals that responds to the qualities of light and space. Holding Pattern interrogates the question of motion that seems to occupy our time. While some move freely – perhaps too freely – motion is haunted by its shadow, the forced immobility of those who are unable to move but cannot remain. This new work investigates the structure of feeling of a time both enamoured with and discomforted by motion, and its characteristic pattern of impulses, restraints and tones.
