Emerging from a white void, the form retains its individual identity while appearing suspended in a boundless cosmic field. A cloud-like blob sits in front of the gesture, suggesting weightlessness and the sensation of floating high above the physical world.

The work explores another aspect of existence, where energy, resonance and dissonance coexist within our spiritual and material lives. Too much freedom and you paint nothing; too little and the work becomes boring and redundant. Painting requires structure and confinement. Within set boundaries, works of art can be made. Stabbing in the dark leads to an unrefined chaos.

I have created my own set of rules for making work. Within these parameters, a multitude of possibilities exists. Outside them lies confusion, uncertainty and an inability to move forward. It is these very limitations that allow me the freedom to create.

I Need a Magic Pill or a Dose of Super Potion speaks to the desire for motivation, a little help to get things moving. Sometimes I have so many ideas running through my head that I become overwhelmed and unable to act. Can art help us get unstuck? Can a painting offer some relief from the constant demands of connectivity, reactivity and the mundane routines of everyday life? The painting becomes its own magic pill, a way of breaking free from inertia and turning imagination into action.

Blue takes on a transcendental quality as forms collide and overlap, creating a sense of sound, movement and pulsating energy. There is something cosmic about it, as though everything is vibrating at once. The painting is an energy generator. The result is energetic and free, a loaded brushstroke with the illusion of spontaneity. I have to be brave, even rebellious, to pour a massive splat of house paint onto a painting that has taken so long to construct.

Dualities exist simultaneously: freedom and containment, control and spontaneity. Oppositional forces coexist. Certainty is an illusion, and the unexpected is perhaps the only certainty. Abstraction offers a personal freedom; it is poetry made tangible.

Created in the lead-up to Exploration 26, the work echoes the grunge and flamboyance of Melbourne’s urban landscape. Its thick black outlines recall the bold graphic language of Pop Art and comic-book imagery, while its graffiti-like forms, abundant colour and visual excess introduce a heightened sense of energy.

Beneath this visual excess lies a tension between the desire for connection, the need to be seen and heard, and the solitude essential to independent thought. In a world of constant distraction, where we are increasingly controlled by what is presented to us, painting remains an act of personal freedom.

Read: Artist Process

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1005/4179/2550/files/Tamara-Mendels_Connect-To-The-People_-Intercept-My-Brain.-Cheers-To-The-People-Riding-The-Train_2026-1600pt.jpg?v=1793855491
