Since opening its doors in 1989, FLG has gained a reputation for actively supporting the practices of emerging, mid-career and Indigenous Australian artists. Operating beyond a rigid aesthetic or the dictates of fleeting trends, FLG presents works of painterly abstraction, high figuration and sculptural formalism alongside more recent developments in the areas of installation and new media practices. The FLG stable is unified by a core commitment to presenting high quality works demonstrating both technical skill and creative sensitivity.

At the heart of the gallery's ethos is a desire to provide an accessible and inclusive arts environment, accommodating the needs and interests of both artists and collectors. Gallery Director Claire Harris is deeply committed to promoting her stable, bringing both an informed and intuitive perspective to her response to their work. A belief in developing long-term working relationships ensures an intimate and insightful awareness of each artists practice. Harris and her team dedicate their resources to promoting and nurturing the best outcomes for each artist’s career.

Our artists have won an impressive array of awards and scholarships including the Wynne Prize, Sir John Sulman Prize, the Rick Amor Drawing Prize, the Contempora Sculpture Award, the Fulbright Scholarship,  the Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship, Siemens Fine Art Scholarship. Many of our artists have been critically recognised in Art & Australia, Artist Profile, Australian Art Review, The Australian, Art Korea, The Age, & the Wall Street Journal.

The gallery houses two dedicated exhibition spaces, a permanent viewing area and an extensive stock room which is also viewable online. Yearly programming includes major solo and group shows featuring gallery artists, alongside a smaller series of guest artist exhibitions. FLG also hosts Exploration, an annual survey of promising, unsigned artists and recent art school graduates.

As it approaches its twenty-fifth anniversary, FLG's raison d'être remains consistent: to promote artists of exceptional talent and nurture the passion of both new and seasoned art lovers.

Student groups are able to come through the gallery on Thursdays and Fridays. Please call the gallery prior to make an appointment. Whilst you are welcome to visit, due to time constraints and the sheer volume of student groups we have through the gallery, we regret we are unable to address groups or answer student questions directly.

We are unable to respond to individual requests for help relating to student assignments due to the large volume of queries we receive. As a resource for students, we have compiled an information sheet, available here.
